Welcome! We are under construction.
This website is brought to you by the Citizen Exposure Science Collaborative (CESC), which started with a group of scientists, researchers, and developers at San Diego State University, dfusion, Inc., and Machine Contingencies with funding from state and federal R&D grants. The CESC is growing to include partners in county health departments, nonprofits, and companies that manufacture Exposure Science instruments and tools.
The CESC offers this free site to enable students and other members of the public to embark on their own scientific Public Health investigations on Environmental Hazard topics that are most relevant to their lived experience in the course of Gathering data, Analyzing data, and Communicating findings.
We are currently focused on Air Quality and personal airborne exposures, especially Secondhand Smoking exposure from tobacco, cannabis, and vaping, but we plan to expand the palette of tools to include surface-, soil-, and food-borne hazards and more data sources, such as meteorological data and data from large air monitoring networks (e.g., U.S. EPA or PurpleAir).
We are especially interested in supporting youth projects in Exposure Science. This website got its start with grants to work with youth on the design of the Personal Exposure Toolkit (PET), which facilitates the documentation of air pollutant exposures. In this ongoing project, youth measure their exposure to e-cigarette vapor in schools and communicated their findings to teachers and school administrators. We are interested in partnerships with schools and youth programs and can provide -- in addition to the resources on this website -- donations of Atmotube PRO personal monitors, and in-person or Zoom-based training and education sessions.
